What are the best home phone providers in my area?

If you already have broadband internet (not through DSL) you can get home phone service for as low as $18 per month with no long distance charges for calls in the US/Canada using VoIP. Take a look at http://www.voiprater.com and there are a number of providers to choose from. Each provider has a number of features and special discounts that are available. Phone Power is great quality and you get a free second line with them as well which makes it my top recommendation.

Using VoIP is extremely simple. All you need to do is plug in a small adapter to your internet and then plug in a regular phone into it. Very simple and easy to do. If you have a cordless phone set with multiple handsets you just plug in the base unit and all the other handsets will work just like they do using Rogers, Bell, Qwest, AT&T, Sprint etc.

The quality is great on VoIP and you can even take your phone with you when you are on the road. Plug in your box to internet while staying in Europe and you have free calls back home etc.

How to setup multiple phones (handsets) to work with VoIP

Many people ask me the question, “Can I use VoIP on more than one phone in my house?”

The easy answer – YES and by the way, the solution is super easy as well.

If you want VoIP for less than $20 a month there are a large number of providers available (see http://www.voiprater.com for a list). Many of those providers will give you a VoIP box for free. This box is what you plug into your router or modem and then you can plug in a phone directly to it just like you would a normal phone jack in your home.  You can then purchase a cheap multi-unit cordless phone set (Walmart, Costco, Buy.com and many other places carry them for under $100 and they include 4 handsets). Plug in the base unit to your VoIP box and viola, phone service in your entire home using VoIP.

No wiring, no cutting holes, no having your local phone company come do anything.  Just order your service, plug in your multiple handset base station and you are ready to go.
